SNL’s Weekend Update Roasts Paramount+ & Trump, Drawing Parallels to ‘Dark Knight Rises’ Villain Bane
In the latest installment of Saturday Night Live’s iconic “Weekend Update” segment, hosts Colin Jost and Michael Che spared no one as they delved into the realms of pop culture and politics.
Jost wasted no time in targeting Paramount+, highlighting the recent controversy surrounding the digital release of the 1968 film “Romeo and Juliet,” which featured explicit images of the teen stars. With a sharp wit, Jost quipped, “Paramount has agreed to lock it away where no one will ever see it — Paramount+.”
However, it was the ongoing saga of Donald Trump that took center stage. The duo couldn’t resist poking fun at the former president, acknowledging his victory in the South Carolina primary with a sly remark: “which means that Trump is now undefeated, everywhere except the court.”
Playing a clip of Trump adopting what was described as “a more moderate and unifying tone” for the general election, Jost couldn’t help but draw parallels to a familiar source.
“November 5th will be our new liberation day,” Trump declared, prompting Jost to quip, “but for the liars and cheaters and fraudsters and censors and imposters… it will be their Judgment Day,” drawing a comparison to Bane’s speech from “The Dark Knight Rises.”
Che added his own flavor to the mix, targeting Republican presidential hopeful Nikki Haley’s assertion that she wouldn’t vie for Trump’s running mate position, quipping, “While Tim Scott said he’ll suck the ring right off Trump’s finger.”
And it didn’t stop there. Che couldn’t resist taking a jab at Trump’s latest venture – golden sneakers. With biting humor, he suggested that interested buyers “can check them out on the feet of the guy getting dragged off your flight.”
In a blend of satire and social commentary, SNL’s “Weekend Update” once again demonstrated its ability to tackle the absurdities of both entertainment and politics with equal fervor.
